Amnesty International has launched a campaign aiming to stop Qatar from deporting a former Saudi diplomat. Amnesty says Mishal bin Zaar Hamad al-Mutairy “would be at grave risk of detention and possibly torture or other ill-treatment” if he is sent back to Saudi Arabia. Al-Mutairy reportedly served at the Saudi embassy in The Hague until he accused the diplomatic mission there of being involved in funding terrorism. After he made the allegations public, he secured asylum in the Netherlands in September 2004. He was reportedly blackmailed into returning home to Saudi Arabia where he was detained and said to be tortured before fleeing to Qatar in August 2011.
