Abbasid Colonnade Removed from Grand Mosque

Despite earlier assurances from authorities that the historical Abbasid Colonnade will not be affected by the plans to expand the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the latest photos from the construction site show that the Colonnade is being demolished. Arab News reported Sunday that the domes of the Ottoman-era hallway, another common name for the Abbasid Colonnade, on eastern section of the Grand Mosque have been indeed “removed as part of the ongoing expansion.” Instead of keeping the colonnade as part of the new expansion as it was earlier understood, they will be preserved in a museum, an official said.
