Saudi Film to Miss Oscar Race

“Wadjda,” the new film by Saudi director Haifaa al-Mansour, has received positive reviews when it was shown in festivals in Europe earlier this year. Some movie enthusiasts in the country were hoping that the film would be submitted for the Academy’s foreign-language film category. But there was a problem: one of the Academy’s requirements for films in the foreign language category is to be released in their country of origin. Movie theaters are not allowed in Saudi Arabia. This is so sad.
