Man Jailed And Fined For Twitter Libel

A court in Qatif has sentenced a man to four months in jail and SR 10,000 fine for libeling someone on Twitter, the Dammam-based al-Yaum daily reported Sunday. The newspaper said that 25-year-old Saudi national has admitted that he used Twitter to libel the accuser due to a previous dispute between the two. The sentence in this case is based on Saudi Arabia’s new E-Crimes law, which states in its third article that breaking the law can result in a one year jail sentence and/or a SR 500,000 fine.
